Merino wool has a unique fiber structure that absorbs moisture without feeling wet, while simultaneously wicking away excess heat. The result: a consistently comfortable body climate, whether in a heated office or on a walk in the fresh air. Unlike synthetic fibers, merino wool actively responds to body temperature. It warms when it's chilly and cools when it's warmer. This makes our merino polo shirts and sweaters true year-round companions.

The most common misconception about wool: it itches. With merino wool, the opposite is true. The fibers are so fine that they lie softly against the skin, itch-free, even without an undershirt. In addition, it has a quality that makes all the difference in everyday life: merino wool is naturally odor-resistant. The scaly surface of the fibers offers bacteria little foothold. This means: less frequent washing, longer wear, less effort. And when it does need washing, a gentle cycle at 30°C is sufficient.
Frequently asked questions about merino wool
Merino wool surpasses cotton in several crucial properties. While cotton absorbs moisture and retains it against the body, merino wool transports up to 35% of its own weight in moisture to the fiber's core, while still feeling dry. This ensures a significantly more comfortable feel, especially in fluctuating temperatures.
Merino wool also excels in temperature regulation: The natural crimp of the fibers traps air and provides insulation in cold weather, while allowing excess heat to escape. Cotton does not offer this active regulation.
Another advantage: Merino wool is naturally antibacterial and odor-resistant. Where a cotton shirt needs to be washed after one day, a merino polo shirt can be worn several times without developing an unpleasant smell. This saves fabric, water, and energy.
Furthermore, merino wool offers natural UV protection of up to UPF 50+ and is biodegradable. A clear advantage over synthetic alternatives and also over conventional cotton.
No. That's probably the most common misconception about wool. Conventional virgin wool has fibers with a diameter of 30 to 40 microns. These are stiff enough to itch against the skin. Merino wool, on the other hand, has a fiber diameter of only 16 to 24 microns. That's finer than a human hair.
These extremely thin fibers gently bend upon contact with the skin, instead of poking. The result is a soft, smooth feel, worn directly against the skin, without an undershirt. High-quality merino wool, like the kind we use at AD.M Using it is often perceived as more pleasant than cotton.
No, and that's precisely what makes merino wool so special. The fiber regulates body temperature in both directions. In winter, it insulates against the cold, while in summer it wicks away heat and dries quickly. In Switzerland, where a spring morning can start cool and become warm by midday, this is a real advantage.
Our merino polo shirts and sweaters are therefore not only suitable for the cold season, but as year-round companions. The long-sleeved polo shirts made from lighter merino wool, in particular, can easily be worn from September to May, and certainly on cooler summer evenings.
Merino wool is easier to care for than many people think. The most important rules:
Washing machine use is permitted, on a gentle or wool cycle at a maximum of 30°C. Use a pH-neutral liquid detergent or a special wool detergent. Do not use fabric softener or bleach. Spin at a low speed (max. 600 rpm) and dry the garment flat in the air, not in a tumble dryer or on a radiator.
Thanks to merino wool's natural self-cleaning properties, it's often enough to air the garment overnight. Merino wool absorbs significantly less odor than cotton or synthetics. Frequent washing is therefore neither necessary nor recommended. This protects the fibers and extends the garment's lifespan.
The price is explained by its origin, processing, and durability. Merino wool comes from Merino sheep, which only produce a limited amount of wool each year. The fibers must be sorted, washed, and processed into fine yarn using elaborate methods. This is significantly more complex than with cotton or synthetic fabrics.
Furthermore, high-quality merino wool is more durable than cheaper materials. The fibers are elastic, retain their shape, and hardly pill if they are of good quality. A merino sweater or polo shirt that is properly cared for will last for years and still look like new even after many washes.
